Blog: Fortinet Firewalls

Top Rated for security and performance

Although the phrase “Human Firewall” has a nice ring to it, leaving our network’s security in the hands of our employees should be the last resort. With cybercriminals launching new and more sophisticated attacks, we need a security posture that keeps our networks protected. Fortinet offers a robust line of Next Generation Firewalls and a broad Security Fabric providing a single pane of glass for configuring Unified Threat Management to keep up with the ever-changing Cyber Security Threat Landscape. Gartner, a leading research and advisory company, named Fortinet a “Leader” in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise firewalls. Fortinet’s broad portfolio of products means that there is a Fortinet product that is sized for any need from branch office to data center.

Fortinet’s FortiGate products are the core of the Fortinet Security Fabric, defending against known and unknown attacks to provide network security across the entire attack surface. With powerful intrusion prevention, application control and anti-malware intelligence, the FortiGate firewall allows you to look deeper into your content, applications, user and device behavior. Rich console views and reports, together with a flexible policy engine, provide the visibility and control you need to empower employees yet secure your enterprise. As opposed to traditional firewalls, the FortiGate can be tied into Active Directory to not only track user activity via IP but via domain and username. This is extremely useful when monitoring user activity on authenticated devices. The FortiGate doesn’t just stop here though, policy configuration can be modified to a way to enforce Network Access Control forcing anyone on the network to authenticate against the domain.

In a recent test results blog post, the FortiGate 7060E & 3000D earned a Recommended rating and high security effectiveness scores at 97.9% and 98% in the Security Value Map. NSS Labs, recognized globally as the most trusted source for independent, fact-based cybersecurity guidance also has recognized Fortinet for its superior performance in the IT Security Field. Vikram Phatak, CEO of NSS Labs stated “NSS Labs is focused on empowering enterprises to make informed decisions based on independent real-world testing results. We applaud Fortinet’s commitment to third-party testing. Fortinet’s Recommended rating in our 2017 NGIPS Group Test makes them a great option for any business looking to strengthen their security architecture.”

Fortinet’s Security Fabric extends security beyond the FortiGate firewall to a broad array of Fortinet solutions. Commonly purchased solutions by VPLS Solutions’ customers include Secure Switching (FortiSwitch), Secure Wi-Fi (FortiAP), SIEM (FortiSIEM), Endpoint Security (FortiClient) and more. When combined with the FortiGate firewall, security policies can be pushed down to the network edge, and even the client, to insure uniform conformity to company security standards.

If network security is an important focus for your organization, VPLS Solutions would highly recommend Fortinet’s FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls and Fortinet’s broader Security Fabric. VPLS Solutions is a Platinum Fortinet partner, Fortinet’s highest partner status level, with numerous Fortinet certified personnel on staff. Additionally, VPLS Solutions has a Fortinet NSE 8 on staff. The NSE 8 is the highest Fortinet certification and VPLS Solutions is the first Fortinet partner to have an engineer with the NSE 8 certification. Ruckus ICX 7650-  The Campus Fabric of the Future

The Ruckus Campus Fabric is efficient, cost effective and flexible. The game changer? The new Ruckus ICX 7650.

The Ruckus ICX 7650 comes in a variety of models giving it the ability to serve as a high-end campus edge switch, or medium sized data center or enterprise core. The Ruckus ICX 7650-48P comes with 48 10/100/1000 RJ-45 PoE+ ports with 8 of those ports supporting UPoE and PoH. It can stack leveraging 4 x 40G ports or, more impressively, leveraging dual 100 Gig QSFP ports. Additionally, there is an added slot for a 2 x 40G or 4 x 10G uplink module.

The Ruckus ICX 7650-48ZP is where things really get exciting. It offers 24 x 10/100/1000 RJ-45 PoE+ ports, but adds 24 ports of 100 Mbps, 1 Gbs, 2.5 Gbps, 5 Gbps or 10 Gbps all offering PoE+, PoH or UPoE. The 7650-48ZP is a nice competitive answer to some of the newer products from Aruba such as the 8320 and 3810 that blazed the trail with multi-Gig port flexibility in mid-2017. The flexibility these new multi-Gig products offer is great for customers whose needs might evolve over the life of the product. Also, clients looking towards the future 802.11ax standard will enjoy the flexibility offered by 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps ports. And, just being able to plug in devices, be it 1 Gig, 2.5 Gig, 5 Gig or 10 Gig and not have to worry about what port to plug it into just makes things a lot easier for network managers.

The Ruckus ICX 7650-48F is the fiber version of the 7650. It offers 24 100/1000 SFP ports and 24 x 1 Gbps / 10 Gbps ports. The same 40G and 100G stacking and uplink module options are offered on the 7650-48F, as well.

The Ruckus 7650 provides all the standard features you might expect in a switch of this class. These include redundant / hot-swappable power supplies, a reasonable PoE budget of 1500W, and support for common protocols. There are a few additional features the team at VPLS Solutions is excited about:

Stacking
The Ruckus 7650 offers the ability to stack using standard Ethernet ports. This saves customers from having to purchase proprietary stacking cables or modules. Although modules are offered for higher 40G and 100G speeds, they are not required.

There are also several enhancements in the stacking architecture that allow for greater availability. In service upgrades, hitless stack failover from master to standby stack controller is a great feature. Hot insertion and removal stacked units also allows for network admins to add and remove switches more conveniently. The 7650 stacks up to 12 units.

Routing
The 7650 offers advanced L3 IP routing protocols including 128K IPv4 and 7K IPv6 BGP routes. While not the 1M or 2M BGP routes seen in carrier focused products, these numbers are sufficient for most medium enterprise cores or data centers.

Going Green
The Ruckus ICX 7650 Switch supports the IEEE 802.3az standard for Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), reducing power consumption during periods of low utilization. Ports are placed into a low power mode when no data is being transmitted. This could be as simple as placing ports in low power mode during holidays and non-work hours. Think of the substantial power savings.

All in all, the VPLS Solutions team is excited about the new Ruckus 7650. Our Orange County, CA, Los Angeles, CA and San Diego, CA based engineers have most Ruckus ICX expertise in the industry. If you would like to learn more about the ICX 7650 or set up a consultation about network infrastructure upgrades generally, we would love to hear from you.
