A Virtual Reality live concert experience in 3 sites across the globe seems like a big project, right? Now imagine it having to run simultaneously. This was a one-of-a-kind project. When a music icon announces his final tour to all his fans across the world in real time, this is exactly how it is going to happen. With his fan base spread across New York, Los Angeles, and London, this VR experience was sure to need some great technologies to stream live.
Spinifex Group is a leading media production group that specializes in audience engagement through the design and production of imaginative, interactive and immersive media experiences.
Getting into the Technology
Picture this, 500 eager fans awaiting with their VR headsets streaming this live concert experience. The wireless was a high priority as it had to simultaneously sustain the connectivity of all devices. A Wireless network was built out to support 100 Connected VR Headsets streaming in LA and London and 300 Connected VR Headsets streaming in NYC.
To support this type of sensitive Wireless network, our customer needed switching that could deliver results. Not only providing adequate throughput for the clients but also provide the port density and speed needed to allow users to experience a show of a lifetime.
We can’t forget about the Firewalls. They were needed to allow Internet Access for the Stream Site to site Live Performance while protecting devices from Malware or Intrusion with Next Generation Firewall features. We needed to not only provide security, but pure horsepower behind Unified Threat Management traffic inspection.
When looking for the right products that would support the high demand of this project, we wanted the best in breed technologies. Our top choice for the wireless switching was Brocade/Ruckus ICX 7150 -C12P Switches, Ruckus R610 for Access Points, and Fortinet FortiGate for Firewalls.
The Brocade/Ruckus ICX 7150 -C12P were fanless, gigabit, POE switches to help the minimize noise. The specific model that we chose has 68gbps switching capacity, with L3 Routing out of the box. Based on their reliability and cost, they were the perfect choice.
On the security side, we utilized FortiGate firewalls that could support over 20 Gbps of straight firewall throughput with Next Generation Firewall protection of over 1.8 Gbps. This number varied per site as the number of users varied, but suffice it to say that the FortiGate firewalls combined with the Ruckus switching and wireless provided the horsepower we needed to meet the client’s throughput requirements.
After a flawless execution, fans around the globe had the ultimate VR experience. Whether you were in one of the auditoriums or watching on YouTube, the live stream aired without a single glitch.
